Is it a bird, is it a plane...

This is a confusing time of year for root vegetables. Last week it was Burns night which brings with it the debate of whether the vegetable that you eat with the Haggis is a turnip (neep), as it is known in Scotland, or a swede as it is called in England. Whilst shopping last week here in Texas I found that the confusion doesn't end there. The poor vegetable can also be know as a Rutabaga!

If you are english (like me), you have mashed swede with your haggis.

If you are scottish then a swede is a turnip (or neep). A turnip is also a turnip.

A swede is a turnip.

We had turnips a long time before the other turnip appeared. Initially it was imported from Sweden, became very popular and was called a Swede, but it's still a turnip (as the Scots know well).

Don't forget to have a wee dram wi yer haggis.

scottish word for tunip is tumshie, when i was young we used to go for walks in the country.all day walks, so you would get hungry.
nothing like a fresh picked tumshie washed in a burn.keeps you going till you get home for tea.
